Europa League - Buntes - Ins falsche Land geflogen

"Mailand oder Madrid? Hauptsache Italien!"

Lost in translation: Bilbao fans get their countries confused for Europa League Final

Around 400 Athletic Bilbao fans chartered a plane to Budapest, instead of Bucharest, and missed out on the Final

It's to be hoped Chelsea fans heading to the Champions League Final on Saturday have a better sense of direction than some Athletic Bilbao fans.

The Basque club supporters wanted to watch their heroes take on Atletico Madrid in last Wednesday’s Europa League final in Bucharest. It was the biggest game of Bilbao’s season.

So 400 Bilbao fans decided to charter their own plane to take them to the final. And that’s where they made a colossal mistake.

The final was in Bucharest, capital of Romania. The Athletico special flight took the fans from Bilbao to Budapest, the capital of Hungary. They were only 397 miles from where they needed to be.

They were stranded in Budapest and were not able to make new arrangements for the entire group of fans to be transported to the big game.

The fans desperately tried to book train and bus tickets but then discovered their next problem. Their charter flight was booked to fly home soon after the game finished - and the plane remained in Budapest.

A Bilbao victory would have been some consolation. But they lost 3-0.

And, believe it or not, the official UEFA match annnouncer inside the stadium made a terrible mistake.
